💬 Using the AI Answer Coach on Gap Questions

How the Answer Coach helps you answer Sprout's resume gap questions, so your generated resume and cover letter are stronger.

When Sprout reviews a job against your profile, it spots gaps — requirements the posting asks for that your resume doesn't clearly evidence — and asks you about them. The Answer Coach is a chat assistant that helps you answer those questions well.

📍 Where to find it

Gap questions appear while you're reviewing an application, and on the application's Questions tab. Alongside them you'll find the Coach tab in the side panel, next to Details.

The Coach works on one question at a time, and each question keeps its own conversation. Move to a different question and you get a fresh chat, while the previous one stays where you left it.

🚀 Getting started

There are three prompts to get you going:

  • Help me answer this question — a draft to build on when you're staring at a blank box

  • What are they really asking? — unpacks which job requirement the question is probing, and what a strong answer needs to show

  • Review my current answer — feedback on what you've already written

You can also just type your own message. It's a conversation — push back, ask for a shorter version, tell it the draft doesn't sound like you.

Each question also comes with a hint and often a sample answer, which are a good starting point before you even open the Coach.

✅ Using a suggested answer

When the Coach proposes an answer, it appears as a card in the chat. You can:

  • Accept it — the text is added straight into the answer box

  • Dismiss it — the suggestion is set aside and you carry on

Some suggestions include the Coach's reasoning, which you can expand to see why it answered that way. That's often more useful than the answer itself — it tells you what the employer is likely screening for.

Anything added to the answer box is still fully editable. Nothing is locked in.

📄 Why your answers matter

These answers aren't filed away somewhere. They feed directly into the resume and cover letter Sprout generates for that job.

If a posting wants experience your resume doesn't spell out, and you have it, this is where you say so — and the generated documents will reflect it. A few minutes here genuinely changes what gets submitted.

✍️ Read it before you send it

The Coach works from your profile and the job posting, so it can only be as accurate as what it knows about you. It can occasionally state something about your experience that isn't quite right.

Always read a suggested answer before accepting it. Make sure it's true, and make sure it sounds like you — an answer in your own voice will serve you better than a polished one that isn't yours.

If the Coach is getting details about you wrong, your profile is usually the place to fix it:

⚡ Does the Coach use credits?

No. Chatting with the Answer Coach doesn't cost credits — those are used when you apply to a job. Ask it as many questions as you like.

❓ Still have questions?

If the Coach tab isn't appearing next to your questions, reply here and someone from the Sprout team will take a look.
